THE BUZZ AROUND APITHERAPY

THE BUZZ AROUND APITHERAPY
don't mind your beeswax, get in the know!

No doubt you’ve heard the highly esteemed ‘A’ word on the health scene, and for good reason too. But do you know what all the buzz is about?

Apitherapy is the alternative practice of using beehive by-products in medicine and cosmetics to heal and nourish the body for health or beauty purposes. Bees produce the following substances that are invaluable to humans; honey, beeswax, propolis and royal jelly.

The power of bees: bees are classified as ‘critical pollinators’ - without bees half of earth’s plants would cease to exist, without these plants a staggering number of animals would die out and as a result of both, humans would face an existential threat due to lack of food and imbalance in the ecosystem (1). What’s more is that we need plants to breathe (2)! Without bees helping to sustain the lives of plants, our oxygen supply would slowly reduce. With all the influence bees have on our environment, it comes as no surprise that their own environments, hives, hold unparalleled healing properties.

Over time, humans have harnessed the knowledge of how to incorporate bee by-products into lives, henceforth the practice of ‘Apitherapy’ was born. The name stems from the Latin word ‘apis’ meaning bee, so apitherapy simply translates to bee therapy. Apitherapy has been around since before 3000 BC. To give you a little history, in ancient Egypt, Pharaoh used propolis and honey to treat wounds and embalm the dead during the mummification process, and the great philosopher Aristotle studied propolis extensively (3)! At Beesline, we have taken apitherapy’s history and given it a future...

A DROP OF HONEY...

honey

HONEY (Mel) is a substance produced by bees from the nectar they gather from flowers. The honeybees convert this nectar by a process of regurgitation and evaporation and store the honey as a primary food source in wax honeycombs inside the beehive. Highly concentrated in vitamins, minerals, antioxidant flavonoids and essential amino acids, honey moisturises the skin, increases its immunity and prevents bacterial growth. These potent qualities make honey ideal for clarifying, treating and preventing acne, slowing down the ageing process and boosting the skin’s radiance by soothing and restoring moisture.

A DASH OF BEESWAX...

BEESWAX (Cera Apis Mellifera) is a nutritious substance rich in vitamin A, a natural antioxidant beneficial to cell reconstruction and in specific fatty acids, compatible with skin lipids. The wax is formed by eight wax-producing glands in the abdominal segment of the bee and secreted while constructing the honeycomb. The workers collect it and use it for structural material in the hive. When used on the skin, beeswax forms a breathable protective barrier against external dehydrating agents, irritants and the cold thus protecting the skin from cracking, chafing and redness. It is also a skin healer used for minor irritations due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Additionally, beeswax acts as an emollient and humectant to regenerate and soften skin by drawing moisture to the skin and sealing it in.

A DOLLOP OF ROYAL JELLY...

ROYAL JELLY is the milky-white waxy substance secreted from the glands in the hypopharynx of worker bees and is fed to the larval bees in the colony. With antibacterial and anti-ageing properties, it is highly nutritious and rich in proteins, minerals, vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, C, D & E), natural acetylcholine, flavonoids, amino and nucleic acids. Royal jelly contains two main active ingredients: HDA unsaturated fatty acid that promotes cells longevity and royalactin protein. As a result, it regenerates the cells and tissues leading to an increased collagen synthesis for tighter, firmer skin and protects the skin from ageing caused by UV damage. Royal jelly also stimulates the immune system to fight against viral and bacterial infections and supports wound healing and tissue repair.

A SPRINKLE OF PROPOLIS...

PROPOLIS is a resinous mixture that honey bees collect from tree buds, sap flows or other botanical sources. It is used as a sealant for unwanted open spaces in the hive. Worker bees mix this substance with their salivary secretions to form the “bee glue”. Rich in more than 30 strong antioxidant flavonoids and essential oils propolis has powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Propolis is particularly effective in fighting and treating infections by activating the immune system and soothing pain. It accelerates the healing of destroyed tissues and can be used on serious cuts, bruises, sore throats, athlete’s foot, for daily tooth and gum care and as an antidandruff for the hair.
